During the first lockdown in Spring 2020 I was asked to contribute short live performances from my home to a Facebook group: Crystal Palace Lockdown Live. The group was the idea of furloughed stage manager Shane Thom and his partner Corrie Cooper, and was intended to be a short-term series of online events to raise the spirits of those of us who felt starved of live music. As the pandemic ground on, the regular Saturday events continued for over a year with the final show on 3rd April 2021. In all I played 15 shows over the year, each one an opportunity to try out new mixes and ideas I was working on in front of a live audience. Despite the remote nature of the shows the focus of performance allows you to hear the music differently, especially in terms of arrangement. The entirety of my album Slave Dances (Seven Portraits) and the Euclidean Patterns EP were tested in these 20 minute gigs which became increasingly theatrical, involving lights, props, video and even at one point a smoke machine.
